Telepathy literally means distant feeling. The roots of this come from the Greek words tele which means distant, as in telephone and television, and pathe which means feeling as in empathy and sympathy. However, it is more often associated with the transmission and reception of thoughts or images from one person to another.

Telepathy doesn’t generally happen in the way that is sometimes depicted by the media, i.e. that thoughts are heard out loud as if another person is speaking out loud to us. Rather, it is more likely that that at least some of us who are more open to telepathy may confuse our own thoughts with other people's and the potential for telepathy, as ‘shared thoughts’ is within us all. Distinguishing what is another’s thoughts and what are our own can be tricky for some. It may help to raising our awareness of our subconscious selves and getting to know ourselves very well so that we then begin to see which of our thoughts may not originate from within. Meditation and quietening the mind plays a part in this process.
An example of telepathy is when we know who is on the phone when it starts ringing. The coincidences where two friends or two people on the same wavelength say that they have been thinking about each other, usually on the same day, at least, if not exactly at the same time. Telepathy can occur quite naturally when we have a good link with e.g. someone in the family, a close friend or a partner. Images as well as words can be passed between sender and receiver. This does not mean that we're privy to someone's every thought and their safety mechanism is of course their denial and perhaps our own lack of trust in what we receive! It is easier to experiment with telepathy with those that we have a good connection with, that we feel more in tune with i.e. we resonate strongly with them. Experimenting with someone who is verbally expressive and open to sharing their thoughts with us makes it much easier to de-tangle what are our own thoughts and those that are shared.
It can be useful to remain rational and grounded about a potentially irrational process,and to look for logical explanations (this can conversely strengthen psychic development as it helps to get the fluff out of the way!) Sometimes what we might initially believe to be telepathy might not necessarily be so. What we assume may be telepathy for instance might be based on knowing a person and being able to accurately predict their reactions to certain things that occur, because over time, we have come to know the way that they think and how they are likely to respond - i.e. what they would like for dinner. Other things such as body language might also come into play, in that we can see whether we’re consciously aware of it or not, that someone is uncomfortable or excited, that their face says ‘no’ or ‘yes’ for instance.
It may also be useful to distinguish and question whether there is a logical lead up to what we think may be telepathy. If for instance we are watching TV and see someone that looks like a friend, we might naturally start to think about that friend and wonder how they are. This might not be telepathy, but they could well pick up that we are thinking about them as we send out that ‘wonder’ into the world and we might just pop into his or her mind. If we are in the supermarket wondering which apples to buy and a friend suddenly pops into our head is it because they used to work in a fruit and vegetable shop too - or was this just a random thought?
It is not just people that we can experience telepathy with. Spirit guides, or spirit (those who have passed over) communicate telepathically to convey their information, by impressing us with words, images or feelings.
The internet can be a very useful development tool. By coming into contact with other people from all over the world this can be a real bonus for helping us to recognise telepathic reception. When we have no other way of knowing that they are about to send an e-mail, or they have been having a bad day and we suddenly get that feeling that all is not well with them - yet we cannot read their body language and they suddenly they come into our mind (often the back of the mind as a thought) it might be that a connection has been made. These occurrences can be rather thought provoking and inspiring!
If we take the mystic and fear out of telepathy (eg ‘they can read my mind’), we may see the potential whereby it could be life enhancing, allowing us to be more open and honest with each other. An interesting account of telepathy is in ‘Mutant Message Down Under’ by Marlo Morgan which tells of how the aboriginals regularly use telepathy as a means of communication and Rupert Sheldrake’s book, ‘The Sense of Being Stared At’ are interesting reading.

Repeatedly experiencing fear can open the chakras (the energy centres of our body, where we receive or send out information), whereby the person remains on red alert, open to danger and also open to the receipt of psychic information. Poor verbal expression within relationships can leave others second guessing what a person is trying to communicate - is telepathy filling in the gaps and good guesswork? Ultimately I think not, but it may spring from this at its roots. It is also worth remembering that an abusive dynamic within relationships may be that a person declares ‘you should know what I am thinking’ - which is an unreasonable request. Effective verbal communication and a good strong throat chakra,is the healthy way forward to remain grounded with the psychic realms.
